INFOGRAPHIC: Preload in Wheel Bearings

The Doctor is In

Doctor Preload is here to explain why setting your wheel bearings to preload can result in dramatic improvements to common wheel end symptoms. With wheel bearings in preload, you can expect improved tire mileage, less downtime and technician time, increased fuel mileage, enhanced brake system performance, increased safety, and reduction in maintenance costs! But of course..there’s only one way to consistently and accurately measure preload…and that’s with our Doctor Preload wheel bearing adjustment tool.

Preload in Wheel Bearings

  1. Endplay is hurting your fleet. Setting your bearings to preload, however, can reduce irregular wear and enable optimum tire performance. “The diagnosis is clear. Endplay is hurting your fleet.” – Doctor Preload
  2. Preload exists when all clearances (endplay) between components in the wheel end assembly are completely eliminated and bearings are slightly compressed. Experts agree, preload is the preferred setting for heavy duty trucks and trailers. “The scientific evidence is undisputable!” – Doctor Preload
  3. Preload isn’t torque! Torque should never be used to adjust bearings to presumed preload condition because the final preload setting cannot be measured, thus creating unsafe inconsistency in bearing settings. “Did you say torque? Oh dear. This is serious.” – Doctor Preload
  4. Preload is not pre-adjusted. Certain wheel ends include a metal spacer between the bearing cones that are “pre-adjusted” at the factory. They are often set to endplay, resulting in reduced tire life. Further, they cannot be adjusted to a better setting without removing the cone spacer. “Did you say pre-adjusted? Not the same!” – Doctor Preload
  5. Doctor Preload bearing adjustment tools allow your technicians to quickly and accurately adjust wheel end bearings to SAE standard* light preload settings while measuring preload forces all the way through the adjustment process and at the final preload setting. *(Society of Automotive Engineers Specification J2535 specifies preload values for optimum wheel end performance of heavy duty trucks and trailers.) “I prescribe the standard treatment.” – Doctor Preload
  6. Fleets report significantly improved tire mileage, less downtime and technician time, increased fuel mileage, enhanced brake system performance, increased safety, and reductions in maintenance costs. “At your follow-up in a few months, I’m expecting great results!” – Doctor Preload
